Spirit of the Silver Forest
For a moment, I could hardly tell where the bear ended and the forest began. The silver branches, the weathered wood, the warm brown needles, all of it seemed echoed in his fur. He stood within the fallen trees with such a complete sense of belonging that I found myself wondering whether I was looking at a photograph or a painting.
His broad body fills the opening between the trunks, giving weight and scale to the delicate web around him. Dark legs anchor him to the riverbank while the lighter fur across his back meets the muted colours of the forest. Look closely and the same lines seem to travel through both: strands of coat becoming needles, the sweep of his shoulders answering the curves of the wood.
This is why the image means so much to me. I wanted to hold that moment of recognition, when an animal and its landscape seemed to become one. Even now, my eye moves between them, discovering the bear, then discovering all the ways the forest carries his likeness.
